AFREC is advancing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to improve appliance efficiency across Africa. Through training and support, countries are adopting standards that reduce energy use, lower emissions, and expand access to affordable electricity, positioning energy efficiency as a driver of sustainable development.

In March, the African Energy Commission hosted a continental training in Lusaka focused on electricity distribution grid loss reduction. The programme brought together over 50 experts from more than 20 African Union Member States.

Electricity losses across Africa often exceed 20%, significantly impacting energy availability and utility performance. These losses stem from both technical inefficiencies and non-technical challenges such as theft and metering inaccuracies.

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) through its African Energy Information System (AEIS) and capacity building programs has been supporting the Energy Statisticians from the AU Member States to address issues related to data collection, analysis and dissemination.
