The most robust energy policies are based on a comprehensive understanding of the current situation upon which an assessment of possible actions and of their impact can be made and evaluated. It is a fact that the best assessment needs comprehensive energy data, indeed timely, detailed. It obvious thatreliable energy data constitutes the foundation for any sound energy policy.
This report is one of series reports that AFREC have been producing to shed light on the energy situation in Africa, using data collected by AFREC from AU member states. The reports aim to enhance understanding on specific fuels, their production processes, trade and use, while serving as a framework instrument to policy makers across all African countries.
The analysis presented in this report was made possible by the support and input of energy statisticians in AU member states aimed at producing comprehensive energy statistics. Robust and comprehensive data is essential to understanding the situation in Africa and helping with the development of suitable policies. While supply data is generally widely available, all countries need to develop more comprehensive data on energy demand.
The people of the world face a unifying challenge: to act together; take action, stop climate change and the impact that the rising temperatures will have on availability of water, food, health and the very existence of some countries. Climate change is caused by Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and the largest source of those emissions is Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from the fossil fuels that people burn.
As a significant net exporter, Africa plays an important role in the global oil market in terms of reserves, production and trade of crude oil. As in some other oil producing regions in the world (e.g. Europe, CIS, Asia-Pacific), conventional oil production in Africa is however now on the decline.

The policy brief provides a detailed analysis to policy makers, on how Biomass is used in Africa.
It is developed using AFREC’s data ranging between 2012 to 2019, hence, guiding policy makers to take evidence-based solutions, which will enable a smooth transition from an energy landscape currently dominated by biomass, to a less biomass-dependent energy mix, should the current level of biomass consumption not be sustainable.
