AFREC Launches Online Smart Grid Technology Training To Boost Africa's Energy Sector

26 February 2025, Algiers, Algeria-The African Energy Commission (AFREC) officially launched an Online Training on Smart Grid Technology, aimed at empowering over 60 energy practitioners across Africa with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in Smart Grid Technology.

The training, which runs from 26 February to 10 March 2025, is part of AFREC’s strategic initiatives to build and strengthen the capacity of African professionals and institutions in the energy sector. The initiative further seeks to improve institutional capabilities as well as enhance the efficiency, resilience, and sustainability of electric networks across Africa. 

The training covers a wide range of critical topics, from the fundamentals of Smart Grid Technology to advanced solutions like Data Analytics, Grid Optimisation, and Renewable Energy Integration—ensuring participants gain hands-on knowledge to tackle Africa’s evolving energy challenges.

In his opening remarks, the AFREC Head of Policy Planning and Strategy, Mr Yagouba Traore speaking on behalf of the Executive Director, Rashid Ali Abdallah, expressed his appreciation to EDF International Networks for their collaboration and technical expertise in delivering the training, emphasising the importance of the training as a key component of the Comprehensive Capacity Building Programme for the African Energy Sector.

“Smart Grid Technology is rapidly transforming the global energy landscape, and Africa must not be left behind. Our goal is to foster a new generation of energy experts who will shape the future of Africa’s power sector. It is why we must actively engage, exchange ideas, and apply these new skills to their respective institutions and projects,” stated the AFREC Executive Director. 

Participants of this Smart Grid Technology online training will gain practical knowledge to contribute to modernizing Africa’s energy systems, enhance technical capacities, and support the transformation of the sector into a viable and attractive investment destination. 

Building on this momentum, AFREC remains committed to expanding its portfolio of high-impact training programs, covering critical areas such as renewable energy integration, energy efficiency, and data-driven energy management—key pillars for a sustainable and competitive African energy sector.  

This training on Smart Grid Technology has been financially supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), a strategic partner of AFREC in African Capacity building Programme and enhancing the Energy data in Africa.
