Algiers, Algeria, January 23, 2025 - The African Energy Commission (AFREC) successfully hosted a webinar to launch three vital publications on energy statistics. The event, held on 23rd January and attended by more than 180 energy professionals and stakeholders from across the continent, delved into key insights shaping the future of Africa’s energy landscape. 

The following publications were unveiled: 

1. The Africa Energy Balance, a detailed analysis of the energy flows in Africa, including production, consumption, and regional exchanges.

2. The Key Africa Energy Statistics, a summary of major energy data and trends across Africa.

3. The African Energy Database, a comprehensive compilation of energy information in a digital format.

These publications provide a wealth of data, actionable insights, and strategic recommendations that serve as essential tools for decision-makers, investors, and researchers working towards sustainable energy solutions in Africa. 

 

Key Highlights of the Event

The webinar began with opening remarks by the AFREC Director, Mr Rashid Ali Abdallah, who emphasised the importance of data-driven strategies in tackling Africa’s energy challenges, highlighting the critical role of accurate statistics in guiding the continent’s energy transition. 

This was followed up by a presentation by Ms Salome Maheya, the AFREC Senior Policy Officer, who shared key data collection strategies and how the data presented in the publications can influence policy, enhance investment, and promote innovation in the energy sector. 

 

Audience Participation

The webinar attracted a diverse and engaged audience, with over 180 participants from across Africa and the globe. Attendees were encouraged to participate during an interactive Q&A session and share their thoughts on the presentation.

 

Going forward, AFREC’s Executive Director, Mr Rashid Ali Abdallah, expressed gratitude to all participants, adding that “Reliable energy statistics are the backbone of effective planning and implementation. These publications will support our collective efforts to ensure energy access, sustainability, and security for all Africans.”

The hosting of this webinar and launch of these publications reaffirm AFREC’s position as a leading voice in Africa’s energy sector.
